Claudia Marez

Major: Sociology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Kyla Walters
About
Background:
Claudia is originally from Peru and is the eldest child in a family of 7 children. She grew up in a secular home with parents who encouraged her to challenge herself. At 17, she passed the admission exam for the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos -Dean of America- to study History but unfortunately, she had to abandon her studies to support herself but had always planned to go back to college when the opportunity arose.
Research Interests:
Claudia is interested in researching what can be done to improve the success rate of the Latinx community in education, given that the language barrier is a common challenge that prevents them from socializing, learning, and feeling like they belong. She aspires to be part of an organization that leads education with justice and social inclusion, so researching what contributes to the academic success of Latinx is important for her.
Another one of Claudia's goals is to research labor abuse among migrant workers in order to exert influence in stopping such exploitation. Exploring the root cause of injustice and finding solutions is one way she feels will deepen her commitment to serving the working class, one of the most vulnerable members of our society.
