Kevin E. Lira

Majors: Biochemistry & Interdisciplinary Mathematics
Minor: Biology
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Lisa Hua
About
Background:
Kevin was raised traveling between Monterrey Mexico, and McAllen Texas. His bicultural experience influenced him to have a particular type of care and curiosity for the world. Being raised with a physician in the family inspired him to pursue a career in medical science.
Research Interests:
Kevin is interested in DNA and cell reproduction. The specific question that drives him is “Why do we age?”
Current Research:
Kevin is currently working under the mentorship of Dr. Lisa Hua to study the mitotic chromosomal anti-pairing mechanism. In mitosis, it is essential that chromosomes don't recombine, as that could cause serious health risks. They seek to study the mechanisms that help to prevent this from happening.
